This week is #DeafAwarenessWeek, which runs until May 10.

This is an opportunity for all of us to ensure Deaf people have the right to understand and to work together to break down communication barriers.

In terms of planning for any emergency scenarios - following the LRF’s mantra of “bring prepared not scared’’ - Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) offers specific fire safety advice for those who are hard of hearing to help you feel more confident and safer in your home.

If you have reduced hearing ability for any reason, it’s vital that you are aware of fire safety. Traditional smoke alarms give an audible alert to notify users of a fire. However, some people cannot rely on their hearing ability in scenarios like this.

LFRS invites everyone in Lancashire to apply for a free home fire safety check. Deaf people or those with reduced sensory function may be able to receive a personal visit from a member of their community fire safety team. If you don’t quite fit the criteria for a personal visit, they will still provide you with personalised fire safety advice.

You can apply for a home fire safety check online.

For full details go to the dedicated LFRS web page, which also offers a range of advice videos in British Sign Language on a wide range of topics at British Sign Language | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service including:

  • Advice on electric heaters and how they should be used in the home.

  • The vital role of smoke alarm maintenance in making sure they are an effective line of defence during a fire.

  • Bedtime routines and why these can help you avoid disaster.

  • Using candles and how you can enjoy them in a safe way.

  • Electrical appliances and some mistakes you can avoid when using them each day.

  • Home fire safety checks – what are they, and what will the fire service do?

  • Your habits around smoking and using e-cigarettes can cause safety issues if you aren’t careful.

If you would like to watch a sign language video about how to access 999 services the Lancashire Health Hub has an informative video here: Accessibility - Lancashire Health Hub. The video promotes the use of the 999 BSL app that helps Deaf people call 999. See here for full details: 999 BSL

Lancashire County Council’s Adult Social Care Sensory Team can support Deaf people who use British Sign Language (BSL), with specialist advice and social care support.

They can help with:

• Advice on specialised equipment, accessibility software and support
• Help with adult social care and other support needs
• Communication in BSL, where this is your preferred language
