Over the last few months, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) has attended several substantial fires on farms and rural land. These recent incidents have caused significant damage to property, loss of livestock and produce, and interruption to business operations.
As we head into the summer months, the risk of fire across the county remains high. LFRS is urging all landowners, farmers and residents living in rural communities to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of further outbreaks.
Fire on rural properties can also spread to become wildfires. England and Wales have experienced more wildfires so far this year than they did for the same period in 2022, which was a record year for wildfires.
Key fire risks during dry weather are:
Operating tools or machinery: Just one spark can ignite dry grass, crops, or straw. Take extra care and only carry out hot work operating machinery or tools that generate heat or sparks, such as welding or grinding, in cleared areas, well away from hay, fuel stores, or wooden structures.
No open flames: Please avoid using bonfires, barbecues, or open fires on farmland or near dry vegetation during this period.
Safe smoking practices: Ensure smoking is restricted to designated areas, far from flammable materials, and always dispose of cigarette ends and matches safely.
Protecting land, buildings, and livestock
Maintain defensible space: Keep grass and weeds short, remove dead vegetation, and regularly trim trees and bushes near buildings and fences.
Use firebreaks and store materials safely: Create firebreaks where practical, and keep hay, straw, fuel, and other combustibles well away from livestock areas and buildings.
If a fire breaks out
Call 999 immediately, and provide:
The exact location (using a What3Words reference or OS grid reference if available).
What is burning or at risk (e.g. hay, fuel, chemicals).
Details of access for fire appliances and any issues with water supplies.
Remain on site to guide crews on arrival if safe to do so.
