Severe weather reminds us of flooding risks
Quick response and the use of pre prepared plans vital to reducing risks
In certain very unlikely situations you may be asked to leave your home by the emergency services or you may choose to leave home yourself. If this happens, leave as quickly and calmly as possible. If you have time, turn off electricity, gas and water supplies, unplug appliances and lock all doors and windows.
If you leave by car, take bottled water and blankets, and tune in to local radio stations for emergency advice and instructions. Make sure you have contacted a friend, relative or neighbour to tell them where you are going and contact them when you have arrived so you can be found if the emergency services or council need to contact you.
When you are told that it is safe to return home, open windows to provide fresh air before reconnecting gas, electricity and water supplies.
During an emergency, you may be asked to Go In, Stay In, Tune In until you get the all clear. This is what that means:
Go In: go indoors. Do not collect your children from school or day-care. They will be cared for there and it is safer for both of you
Stay In: stay indoors. Make sure all windows are closed and there are no draughts or open vents. Follow advice from emergency services with regards to turning off your utilities. Stay calm and rest
Tune In: tune in to local radio stations or news channels for advice on what to do now. Keep phone lines clear. Monitor local radio stations, television broadcasts, or official online sources for updates and instructions.
This ensures that you receive timely information regarding the situation and any changes in safety protocols.
